Adams Teen Hospitalized After Crash On Toby Darden

ADAMS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A teen driver was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville after she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a tree, head-on.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the driver just received her drivers  license three weeks ago and inexperience was the likely cause of the accident. From what we could see at the scene, the driver found one of the worst curves in Robertson County, a right hand hairpin turn going downhill on gravel.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol indicated that the teen driver will not be facing any tickets or charges, just calling it operator inexperience. The accident occurred just passed 5 PM Sunday on Toby Darden Road. (Location of accident)

The THP also indicated that drugs, alcohol or distracted driving were not considered to be factors, it was just a sharp curve that turned out to be too much for the inexperienced driver. Officials told Smokey Barn News that the teen was banged up pretty good but sustained no life-threatening injuries.

If we receive any updates on the teen’s condition we will bring it to you.

Police Chiefs Race At Highland Rim (FULL RACE VIDEO)

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – On Saturday June 11, local Law enforcement from Greenbrier, Ridgetop, Springfield, White House, Millersville the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, Coopertown and Cross Plains all went head-to-head in specially prepared race cars set up just for them at Highland Rim Speedway in Greenbrier Tennessee. It was a winner take all, take no prisoners (no pun intended) race and Smokey Barn News captured all the action!

The fun started with a qualifying round that set the stage for a 20 lap race that stopped at 15 laps for an inversion roll of the dice that reset the field. The final 5 laps were (to say the least) the craziest as the men in blue fought it out for a big beautiful four foot tall trophy and the right to do a victory dance around the field!

We’re not going to spoil it for you by revealing who won, you’ll have to see for yourself in one of the most exciting races ever captured on video at Highland Rim Speedway.

The race was part of a promotion to raise canned-food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Pedestrian Struck By Train In Portland Dies

PORTLAND, Tenn. (Smokey Barn News) – A pedestrian has been struck by a train in Portland early Wednesday morning. MAP

It happened at the Fountainhead Road railroad crossing just before 2:30AM a.m.

According to our news partners at WKRN News 2 the pedestrian has died.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

CSX train officials called in the incident at 2:30AM Wednesday morning and they are now working with the sheriff’s office to learn why the person was on the tracks.

According to our news partners WKRN News 2, the intersection reopened to traffic around 4:30 a.m. IMAGE: Google Maps

According to Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford, the man has been identified as Jonathan Jones, 31, who lived on Poplar St in Portland.

Chief Weatherford told Smokey Barn News that the CSX Train engineer reported that as they approached the intersection the man “jumped out into the middle of the tracks right as they were pulling up to that area, and they were not able to stop.”

Chief Weatherford said they are still investigating the possibility that Jones’ actions were deliberate. The train was moving at about 20 miles an hour, Weatherford said.

Smokey Barn News would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Jones as they face unimaginable grief.

TBI Investigates After Neighbor Finds Two Dead In Cottontown Home

UPDATE: Police confirm: One of the men is the bank robber from Kentucky.

COTTONTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Sumner County Sheriff’s department is currently investigating the deaths of two men at a home located in the 2800 block of Hwy 25 in Cottontown, according to Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford.

The home is located near the intersection of Hwy 25 and Halltown Rd/W Hester Rd. MAP

Carl Hargis, a neighbor and friend to the woman that discovered the bodies and called 911 told Smokey Barn News the woman (who lives directly across the street) headed over to play a game of cards with her friend who drives an 18 wheeler.  As she approached the home she noticed the back door had been kicked in and saw what she believed was the homeowner and another man lying on the floor inside the home, she immediately called police, Hargis said.

carpet consultation 300 adAuthorities have now confirmed that the second man is the alleged Kentucky bank robber that was last seen in the same area on Tuesday. (Read more)

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist in the investigation.

Sheriff Weatherford told Smokey Barn News this afternoon that the investigation will likely go well into the evening and Hwy 25 will be closed near Halltown Rd until it is complete.

UDDATE: Sheriff Weatherford reached out to Smokey Barn News this evening with an update in the investigation. The information provided by Carl Hargis lines up perfectly with what we learned from Sheriff Weatherford and it appears that the one of the men is the bank robber from Kentucky.

Sheriff Weatherford told Smokey Barn news that at 5:14pm Wednesday night deputies responded to an address on hwy 25 in Cottontown for a report of two persons killed.

Recovery Strategies 300 bWhen deputies arrived they found that the homeowner (an overnight truck driver) had arrived home and had been shot. A neighbor reported hearing what they thought were fireworks going off sometime around noon.  Later this afternoon she went by to check on the neighbor. When she arrived she found two people who were deceased inside the home.

Deputies found what appeared to be an apparent gun battle  that happened inside the residence between an apparent burglar and the homeowner. Preliminary reports indicate that the burglar has now been identified by the Bowling Green Police department as the man who robbed the bank yesterday inside their city.

Were still not able to get a positive ID  due to the fact that the equipment brought in by the TBI is not reading his fingerprints for some reason so it will probably be tomorrow before we can identify him by name.

We have been able to identify him by some of the tattoos that were on him. So we are pretty sure of who it is but we are going to wait for an official ID in the morning.

As of 12:AM the street is still blocked and they are still working the crime scene. The bodies still have not been moved. They are using equipment that takes measurements of the room and where the bodies are located for reconstruction purposes.

As soon as police officially release the identity of both men we will bring it to you.

Two Top Springfield Officers Retire After Years Of Service

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –   Jimmy Grogan and Aaron Benton have been with the Springfield Police Department for many years.  Both men have had great careers and, by what we saw at their retirement party held at Springfield City Hall yesterday, they made lots of friends along the way.

Grogan and Benton were laughing a little about the weather, the day of their retirement party the city is hit with a big summer storm that took trees down all over the county.

Even with the weather, the farewell party was a who’s-who that included the former Director of the 911 dispatch Center Elvis Wilson, the former Springfield Police Chief Mike Wilhoit, the current Springfield Police Chief David Thompson, detectives, the Springfield City Manager Paul Nutting and many more.

Grogan  was also a firearm instructor and oversaw the SWAT Team and attended the FBI National Academy.

Grogan told Smokey Barn News that no one day in his long career stands out in his mind, except for the “hard times on Richards Street, they were pretty rough days. It’s been an adventure over the years, long time.”

Driver Faces DUI Charges After Crash With Kids In Vehicle

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A 37 year old Barren Plains woman is in jail this evening on DUI charges and driving on a suspended licence after she lost control of her vehicle and left the roadway careening through a brick mailbox, a large wood fence and a yard, crashing just inches from a home.

The home is located on Blackpatch Dr in Springfield. The accident occurred just before 7:30PM Thursday evening.

Police say there were three children on board, ages 7, 6, and 2. The investigating officer told Smokey Barn News that the woman smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. She was given a field sobriety test and police determined that she was impaired.

She was transported to the Robertson County Detention facility in Springfield. Police also said the the woman could also be facing charges of Reckless Child Endangerment since alcohol was involved.

Investigators said that when children (under the age of 18) are involved in an accident where alcohol is suspected there is a mandatory blood test for the driver, even if it’s a first offence.

None of the children or the driver were injured in the accident.

The homeowners told Smokey Barn News that their grandchildren had just left or they would have been playing in the driveway directly in the path of the vehicle.

Bounty Hunter Gunfire At Walmart Rattles Nerves Saturday

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A bounty-hunter fired his 40 caliber pistol in the parking lot of Walmart in Springfield Saturday evening rattling nerves.

The single shot occurred around 7PM and was heard by a police officer, employees of Walmart and customers. No one knew what was happening for several minutes until police had time to piece it all together.

The bounty-hunter, with help from the fugitive’s girlfriend, was planning on taking the fugitive into custody in the parking lot but it all went south when the fugitive ran.

The bounty hunter fired a taser at the fugitive in the middle of Walmart’s parking lot but missed and it became a foot chase. The two ran around the side of Walmart and that’s when the bounty hunter fired one shot in the air to see if it would make the fugitive stop. It didn’t.

The bounty hunter told police that the round was a blank but he may still be facing charges of Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment. The fugitive escaped.

He then heads into the store to make his purchase. When he returns, the money and wallet are gone, he calls police who arrive quickly. Meet An 8-Yr-Old Springfield Girl With A Heart For Police

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –  For a year and a half, eight year old Kylee Mayhew and her grandmother Rose Crumb have had a mission, make sure the police know they are appreciated.

In that year and a half the two have handed out countless bottles of water, thank you cards, hugs and even prayer to any officer they could find. Police have come to know them on sight.  For police it means that for a few minutes the stress and dangers of their job are set aside for a cold drink of water and a nice hug from a little girl and her grandmother that want them to know that they appreciate what they do.

Recently several local Springfield Police Officers pulled their money together and bought Kylee a brand new bike for her 8th birthday. Kylee told Smokey Barn News that she rides her new bike every day.

The kind words, cold water and hugs comes at a time when police don’t often find themselves on the receiving end of appreciation and Springfield Police say Kylee and her grandmother’s  kindness means a great deal to them.

Raging House Fire Leaps To Adjacent Home Full Of Children

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Saturday night a home located on N. Walnut St in Springfield was destroyed by fire. MAP

Springfield Fire officials told Smokey Barn News that the cause of the fire is under Ken Duley Health Market April 1 - 14 2016investigation.

The fire started just after midnight and was so intense that it leaped to the homes on both sides making its way into the attic of one of the homes.

The home was unoccupied; neighbors telling us the resident had just moved out a day or two earlier. The home to the right of the main fire suffered relatively minor damage but the home on the left was left uninhabitable.

There were five people in the home on the left including four very young children and one adult, Terrence Claybrooks, a family friend who was looking after the children.

Claybrooks acted quickly and got all of the children out of the home quickly. The fire was so intense that it leaped over to the Claybrooks home and penetrated the attic and at least two lower rooms. The fire 4 mapRobertson County Emergency Management Agency is working with the family to find temporary shelter until the home, a rental,  can be repaired. No injuries reported.

This makes the forth unoccupied home fire under investigation in less than a week in Robertson County. The first fire was on July 4, on Cave Springs Rd in the Springfield area.  (Full story) The second fire was on July 8, and was located on John L. Patterson near downtown Springfield. (Full story) The third fire, located on Harper Rd in the Greenbrier area, occurred just yesterday. (Full story).

It seems unlikely that the four fires have any connection but we noted that the first three fires appeared in a straight line on the map and now this forth fire also lines up. See map (above) that shows the position and proximity of the four fires to each other. To go interactive on Google-Maps click on the image.
