Former Greenbrier Assistant Police Chief Charged With Rape Of A Child

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Last week Greenbrier Police received a call from the Child Advocacy Center for Robertson County and DCS in reference to an alleged child sexual assault involving a former Greenbrier Police Department employee.

kevin richards aKevin Richards, 49, of Greenbrier, will be facing charges of alleged Aggravated Sexual Battery and Rape of a Child. Richards is the former Assistant Greenbrier Police Chief under Chief K.D. Smith. Richards left the position last September.

Richards, who now works for the state, according to Greenbrier Police Chief K.D Smith, turned himself into the Robertson County detention facility in Springfield around 8:30 AM this morning and was released on $100,000 bond.

According to Chief K.D Smith, the investigation so far has involved a CAC forensic interview and statements from witnesses.

After the investigation was completed, the evidence was presented to the magistrate and it was determined that there was enough evidence to issue the two warrants for Richards arrest.

“It’s one of these cases that you’re not expecting to have to deal with, especially from either a current or former employee. It’s a tough case to handle but we’re going to do our job, we’re going to handle the case just like any other case that comes in”, Chief Smith said.

Smokey Barn News asked Chief Smith if it was a conflict of interest that his agency is handling the investigation.

“No, if he was still an employee then yes but since he’s a former employee he’s basically a citizen of Greenbrier just like anyone else.”

The age and sex of the child is being withheld to protect the child’s identity.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Obituary for Bonnie Bell

Bonnie-Bell-obitBonnie Bell touched so many lives during her lifetime and many are blessed to call Bonnie “Friend”. Bonnie Lynn Davis was born April 7, 1940 in Atlanta, Ga. She was the only child of James and Etta Davis. She moved to Nashville, TN when she was 3 years old.

Bonnie grew up on Woodmont Blvd. and went to Stokes School and Hillsboro High School where she played basketball, ran track and cheered. She was active in student government and was elected Student Body Secretary her senior year. Bonnie was voted Prom Queen, and was selected as “Best All Round” and “Most Popular” by her peers! Most of Bonnie’s friends would agree that she was blessed and lived a very charmed life!

After high school, Bonnie went to Vanderbilt, where she pledged Tri-Delt and was President of her Pledge Class. She was elected to Student Senate and was very active in intramural sports. Bonnie was a cheerleader for the Commodores and was nominated for “Miss VU”. Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Mack Rolfe and lived briefly in Texas and Florida. They had three sons, including John Rolfe and twins Jim and Dick Rolfe.

They moved back to Nashville, where Bonnie became very active in The Panhellenic Council representing the Tri-Delt’s. She was also the co-chair of publicity when The Eve of Janus was first launched. Shortly after their return to Nashville, Bonnie found herself a single mom of three boys under the age of four. She got her first job at the First American National Bank in The Business Development Department. She then worked for Fridrich and Hooper (now Fridrich and Clark). She handled the role of a single mom for 5 1/2 years.

This all changed when she met the love of her life, Carney Rickman Bell through his sister, Linda Bell Sims. They were married, and started their life together in Springfield, TN. Bonnie inherited amazing twin girls-Karen and Sperry, age 14 and a wonderful boy, Bob age 11. Her boys were 10 and 8 at the time and needless to say their family was officially the “Brady Bunch”. The union was formed at a beautiful ceremony in the home of Dr. Tommy and Trish Frist, and her crew arrived in Springfield in June of 1974.

Bonnie sold real estate for a while in Springfield, then founded a jewelry business called The Karat Patch with one of her good real estate friends. The business quickly grew, and evolved into a successful wholesale jewelry company named Seasons Jewelry. Bonnie’s partner retired in 1996 and her son Dick joined the business. Dick helped grow the business tremendously through Collegiate Licensed jewelry!

In the meantime, all six children grew up ….graduated high school ……graduated from the University of Mississippi….got jobs….got married….. and gave Bonnie and Carney fourteen grandchildren! Life was good!

Then in 1998, their world was rocked when Carney was thrown from a horse on their family farm…..life-flighted to Vanderbilt, and initially given a very slight chance of survival. The Lord listened to the family’ prayers and prayers from people all over the country, and Carney slowly recovered.

Bonnie and Carney then moved to their farm, Bell Bottom Farms, as that was where Carney (“Pop”) loved to be. They later moved to Nashville, to be close to their growing family. Bonnie and the rest of the family were very blessed to have Carney for another 16 years after his accident.

Bonnie worked hard for many years and loved every minute of it. She met many people throughout her life and loved spending time with friends both old and new. She traveled to many foreign countries and made friends all over the world. She loved to take relaxing mini vacations to unwind at the beach or in the mountains. Most of all, Bonnie enjoyed spending time with family and watching her grandchildren grow. It is comforting to know that she is with “Pop” now. She has dearly missed him for the last three and a half years. Heaven has received an amazing Angel. She will be missed.

floral squareBonnie is survived by her children, John (Vanessa) Rolfe of Nashville, Jim (Mary K.) Rolfe of Dallas, TX, Dick (Michelle) Rolfe of Franklin, TN, Karen (Bruce) Bell Moore of Nashville, Sperry (Heber) Bell Simmons of Nashville and Bob (Mary Lee) Bell of Springfield, TN; grandchildren, Tyler Moore, Margaret Anne Moore, Mitchell Moore, Blake Stadler, Briley Bell, Rickman Bell Dutton, Analeese Bell, Becca Rolfe, Jenna Rolfe, Davis Rolfe, Quinn Rolfe, Campbell Rolfe, Nick Rolfe and Richard Rolfe; and great-grandchild, Henry Jack Dutton.

Visitation was held at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 from 2-8pm and at the Springfield First United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 12 Noon until the hour of service at 1pm. Private burial followed with Tyler Moore, Mitchell Moore, Davis Rolfe, Nick Rolfe, Richard Rolfe and Bob Bell serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Tommy Frist, Jr., Steve Riven, Justice Frank Drowota, Herb Kneeland, Bubba Woodfin, Bob Hardison, Bruce Moore, Heber Simmons, III, Michael Dutton, Jim Stadler, Jr., John Barker, Allen Bryan, Toney Catignani, Woody Sims, Dave Malone, David Jones and Lee Barfield.

The family requests donations be made to the Springfield First United Methodist Church, to Project Redesign or to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. All donations may be sent in c/o Austin & Bell. Austin and Bell Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of these arrangements.

Over 4000 Without Power In Greenbrier Area

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – We do have about 4100 CEMC customers without power in the Greenbrier area. CEMC has been notified and is working on the issue.

According to officials, the power outage began about 1:20AM.  As soon as we have a definitive cause we will bring it to you.

We can tell you that there are no reports of accidents or down trees in the area.

UPDATE: Power restored

UPDATE: The Greenbrier area has had several power outages in the last few days. According to CEMC officials, the problem started on Saturday when a tree fell on a transmission, opening the line feeding Greenbrier.

From what we can gather, the tree did a fair amount of damage and it took several days to dial it back in. One official told Smokey Barn News, off the record, that the issue was a regulator in the Greenbrier substation.

According to CEMC, during the final outage around 1:00PM Monday the issue was repaired and that should be the last outage.

CEMC said they take outages seriously and apologize for any inconvenience the interruptions in service may have caused.

1000 In Coopertown Without Power Monday Night

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – On the heels of back to back power-outages in the Greenbrier area, MORE over 1000 CEMC Coopertown customers are without power this evening.

According to officials, the power went out around 9:30pm. According to 911 dispatch there are no reports of trees down or motor vehicle accidents in the area.

CEMC has been notified and is at present looking for the issue. The high temperatures increase the demand for power which tends to find weaknesses in power-grids.

Fortunately CEMC has the equipment and staff to get to the bottom of the issue quickly as they have in the recent storms.

UPDATE: Officials just told Smokey Barn News that they have located the problem, a down power line. How or why the line fell is not known. CEMC crews are working quickly to repair the line.

UPDATE: 11:10pm CEMC has restored power. Total time, under two hours.

Short Power Outage Planned In Greenbrier Tonight

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – CEMC officials tell Smokey Barn News that they are going to interrupt services to about 4000 Greenbrier customers around 10:00pm tonight but the power should be out for just a few minutes.

Greenbrier has had some power issues over the last few days, all triggered by a down tree on Saturday. A regulator, located at a power station on Old Greenbrier Pike MAP, didn’t seem to want to go back to work after the outage so it’s going to that big regulator heaven in the sky.  A replacement regulator is being put in it’s place.

CEMC officials will be working all day in almost triple digit heat to get the new regulator hooked up. They estimate that they will be ready to throw the switch around 10:00pm tonight and the process will take about 15 minutes if all goes well.

Smokey Barn News is in communication with CEMC officials, any updates will be posted here.

UPDATE 11:00PM

The replacement of the regulator went as planned. The power was out for about 30 minutes.  Smokey Barn News covered the activation of the regulator during the power outage LIVE. Below is a recording of that broadcast. Several thousand tuned in to the live feed.

Vehicle Fire Backs Up Traffic in Springfield Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A vehicle fire backed up traffic in Springfield Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:15pm at the intersection of Memorial Blvd and Central Ave. MAP

A large fuel tanker had just started off-loading fuel to a station just feet away. The driver told Smokey Barn News that he had just started to off-load the fuel when he heard a loud pop behind him. He turned around to see a car on fire. He quickly closed the valves and stopped the off-loading process and offered his assistance to the occupants who were not injured in the incident.

Springfield Fire officials said the decision to stop the fueling process by the driver before firefighters arrived was wise. Traffic on Memorial Blvd and Central Ave was backed up for about 45 minutes while crews put out the fire and removed the vehicle.

Greenbrier To Improve Two Railroad Crossings

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – After months of research, two railroad crossings in Greenbrier will be getting a little safer in the coming months.

Recently, Greenbrier City Officials met with TDOT Officials, TDOT Consultants, and CSX Representatives to look at the railroad crossings within the City, according to officials with the city.

All of the crossings in Greenbrier were were given a ” risk analysis” and the decision was made to make improvements to two crossings. Industrial Drive MAP and Main Street MAP.

If you live in the Greenbrier area then you know that there have been issues related to the railroad crossing in and around the city in recent years.

Back in February a couple somehow escaped serious injury after their vehicle was hit by a train at the Industrial Dr crossing (MAP) See video below. FULL STORY

IMG_2639Back in 2014 a Springfield man was lucky to be alive after a train struck the passengers side of the minivan he was driving, again at the Industrial Drive railroad crossing.

His injuries were not life threatening, according to Capt. Randy Pack with Greenbrier Police on the night of the crash.

Any number of things could have happened Pack said, “The vehicle could have rolled, the train could have been going faster, he’s just lucky”

That night Pack also told Smokey Barn News that complaints about drivers not yielding at train crossings were on the rise. Just a month before this accident a young man was hit by a train at the Main St crossing but even before that Greenbrier Police started making a more concerted effort to monitor the railroad crossings.

There have been incidents all along this same stretch of track between Ridgetop and Springfield in recent years. Take a look at this vehicle that became stuck on the tracks at the E College St crossing in 2015. (FULL STORY)

They had to stop the trains while the car was removed from the tracks. Fortunately there was no train in the area at the time or this may have been a different story.  For more local train related stories click here.

Below is a list of improvements that will be made at the Industrial Dr. and main St crossings. Each intersection will be given a different set of improvements.

Recommendations are:
– New 12″ LED lights will replace the older incandescent lights
– Gates will be added at the crossing
– A left turn land will be added on Northbound Old Greenbrier Pk
– New signage and striping within the project limits
– The vertical profile of Industrial Dr near the crossing will be
improved by adding asphalt surface and base layers

Main Street recommendations are:
– New 12″ LED lights will replace the older incandescent lights
with additional lights aimed at Old Greenbrier Pike
– Gates will be added at the crossing
– New signage and striping within the project limits
– New safety lighting will be added

Greenbrier officials say that both crossing projects are expected to be in construction within a year.

“These two projects will be funded 100% with TDOT Safety Funds with the City only being responsible for a 10% portion of the paving that will occur at both crossings,” officials said.

Brave Neighbors Help Couple Escape Burning Home

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –A Springfield home is temporarily unlivable after a fire that broke out in the laundry room around 2:00pm Saturday afternoon. The home is located on the corner of West 15th Ave and Leota St. MAP

According to Captain Cherry with the Springfield Fire Department, the fire is under investigation but the Captain was leaning towards the water-heater as the likely cause of the fire.

Greenbrier Dental implants 300 - BbCaptain Cherry told Smokey Barn News at the scene that there were two people in the home at the time of the fire. As they were making their escape, one of them fell Cherry said, and a neighbor rushed in and help the couple out of the home before firefighters arrived.

The residents, Clifton Walker, who walks with a cane, and his wife Marry, have lived in the home for about 13 years. The Walker’s told Smokey Barn News that there were actually two men that helped them get out of the burning home but they only know their first names, Chris and Kevin. Needless to say, the Walker’s were thankful that the two men were there and willing to step in to help.

As far as the home, Springfield Firefighters arrived quickly and in the sweltering heat of the day, made what firefighters call a “good stop” containing the fire to just the laundry room of the home. The rest of the home does have smoke damage and the home will need some repairs before it is livable again but most of the home in intact.

Captain Cherry also said that there were a couple of dogs in the home but hey also escaped.

The message from Clifton Walker to Chris and Kevin, “Thank you.”
