Sarah Scarbrough Of Springfield Dies In Fatal Crash Sunday

BARREN PLAINS: (Smokey Barn News) – Sarah Scarbrough, 22, of Springfield lost her life in a motor-vehicle accident Sunday morning on Hwy 431 North in the Barron Plains area.

The accident occurred between Ashburn Rd. and Oak Grove Baptist Church on 431 N. around 3:30 a.m. Sunday Morning. (Location of wreck)

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation of the accident. According to the THP, Scarbrough was traveling North in her 1997 Honda Accord on 431 N. when she failed to navigate a curve and lost control of the vehicle.

Blue couch 300 adThe investigating Trooper indicated that after losing control, Scarbrough’s vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway and hit a row of trees. Her vehicle continued down an embankment and impacted a rock bluff in a dry creek bed. Scarbrough was not wearing her safety belt. The investigating Trooper also indicated that safety restraints could have made a difference.

The THP has requested a toxicology report, which is standard procedure in a fatal accident, but made no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors.

North Robertson Fire and Rescue responded to the call. Fire Chief Chad Gregory with North Robertson Fire and Rescue talked with Smokey Barn News about the crash.

“She ran off the road and ended up in a wet weather creek bed about 40 feet below the roadway,” Gregory said.

After looking over the scene, Gregory was considering the possibility that Scarbrough might have had some type of medical emergency. “There’s always the possibility that she had some type of event (meaning medical situation or emergency) that led to the crash,” Gregory said.

Scarbrough was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gregory said the neighbors across the street heard the impact. “They were outside on the back porch and heard the impact and proceeded to try and find the vehicle. It took them a while to actually figure out where it went,” Gregory said.

If the neighbors hadn’t heard the crash the vehicle may not have been located until daylight or later, Gregory said.

North Robertson Fire and Rescue, Robertson County EMS and the THP all responded to the scene.

The thoughts and prayers of the staff at Smokey Barn News are with the Scarbrough family as they face his sudden loss.

Police Seek Suspects In Movie Money Scam

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Over the past several weeks, the Springfield Police Department has received numerous reports of counterfeit bill showing up at businesses around town. The bills look like real currency; however they clearly say “For Motion Picture Use Only” on both sides of the bill.

Detectives Chuck Bogle and Charles Consiglio with the Springfield Police Department have developed several suspects and have obtained video of these crimes from the businesses that were defrauded. There is so much evidence to comb thru and so many hours of surveillance video; Detectives are still putting all the pieces together to ensure that all suspects are properly identified and charged accordingly.

Detectives ask that all businesses, as well as individuals that do any sort of cash business be aware that these counterfeit bills are circulating around Springfield. Detectives have recovered approximately $700 worth of counterfeit currency, but they do believe that there is more out there.

If you come across any of these bills, please notify Det. Chuck Bogle or Det. Charles Consiglio with the Springfield Police Department at 615-384-8422

Prisoner Captured During Carjacking After Attempted Escape

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An inmate incarcerated at the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield exploited a previously unknown flaw in the facility’s design Tuesday evening and managed to escape for a short time.

Image_2016-05-10_22-21-10_127The inmate made it down to Memorial Blvd where he attempted to hijack a vehicle, however, he apparently selected the wrong vehicle. Inside the vehicle was Rita Stone and her daughter Antonia Stone and neither one had any intention of complying with the man’s demands. “I tried to get to his eyes,” Antonia told Smokey Barn News. See video for the full interview.

It was an all out war over the vehicle between the inmate and the mother and daughter from Kentucky. The scuffle gave a very fast and courageous Deputy time to catch up to the inmate and tase him. “The Robertson County Sheriff’s Department, imi hiring small bespecially that young Deputy did an amazing job apprehending the inmate,” said Springfield Detective Rickie Morris.

The Sheriff”s Office released the following Statement:

Deputies from the Robertson County Sheriff’s office observed an inmate on the roof this evening. Immediately the emergency action escape plan went into effect. A deputy at the rear of the building observed the inmate jump off the roof and went into a foot pursuit and chased the inmate down to Memorial Blvd in Springfield. The Deputy was able to apprehend the inmate as he was trying to steal a car and the subject is in custody and back at the facility. The inmate was able to escape via a previously unknown design flaw that will be rectified immediately.

Tuesday’s Attempted Escape From RC Jail Second Try For Inmate

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An inmate incarcerated at the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield exploited a previously unknown flaw in the facility’s design Tuesday evening and managed to escape for a short time.

The inmate made it down to Memorial Blvd where he attempted to hijack a vehicle.

WilsonOn Friday May 13 the Robertson County Sheriff’s office released the name of the inmate. He is identified as Bobby Wilson, 39, of Springfield. Wilson was arrested as a suspect in a home invasion in the Ridgetop area last month. MORE  He has been in the jail since early April.

According to police, back in April, Wilson, was to be charged with aggravated assault X-two, assault,  aggravated burglary, vandalism, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and misdemeanor fleeing. His current bond is listed at $177,000.

Additional charges stemming from Tuesday’s attempted escape are pending, according to Robertson County Sheriff’s Office PIO Ryan Martin.

Image_2016-05-10_22-21-10_127When Wilson made his way down to Memorial Blvd and tried to hijack a vehicle, he apparently selected the wrong vehicle.  Inside the vehicle was Rita Stone and her daughter Antonia Stone and neither one had any intention of complying with the his demands. “I tried to get to his eyes,” Antonia told Smokey Barn News. See video below for the full interview with the mother and daughter.

This is the second time that Wilson has managed to momentarily slip free from the Robertson County Jail. According to a story released by the Murfreesboro Post back in 2007, Wilson was on the run for several days after escaping the jail. MORE (cached version) He was captured several days later. It would have been a different jail back in 2007. From 2008 to 2010 the jail was improved and expanded. (Jail before) (Jail now)

This is also the second escape through the roof of the Robertson County Jail since it was expanded. According to our news partners WKRN News Channel 2, back in 2011, two inmates escaped through the roof of the Robertson County detention facility. MORE They too were quickly captured.

With all three attempts at gaining freedom from the jail, all were short lived.

Obama Administration Issues Transgender Bathrooms Guidance For Schools

Obama Administration Issues Transgender Bathroom Guidance For Schools

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – On Friday the Obama administration issued guidance for public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.

A joint letter from the  Department of  Justice and Department of Education (READ LETTER HERE) was sent to schools today with guidelines on how to treat transgender students.

The letter is not a statement of law but it does suggest that if a school district does not comply they could lose federal funds.

For clarification the letter indicates what Gender identity is;

“Gender identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of gender. A person’s gender identity may be different from or the same as the person’s sex assigned at birth.”

…and

“Transgender describes those individuals whose gender identity is different from the sex they were assigned at birth. A transgender male is someone who identifies as male but was assigned the sex of female at birth; a transgender female is someone who identifies as female but was assigned the sex of male at birth.”

Under the section called “Compliance with Title IX” the letter states:

public bathroom“As a condition of receiving Federal funds, a school agrees that it will not exclude, separate, deny benefits to, or otherwise treat differently on the basis of sex any person in its educational programs or activities unless expressly authorized to do so under Title IX or its implementing regulations.”

In the section called “Safe and Nondiscriminatory Environment” the letter states:

“Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe and nondiscriminatory environment for all students, including transgender students. Harassment that targets a student based on gender identity, transgender status, or gender transition is harassment based on sex, and the Departments enforce Title IX accordingly.9 If sex-based harassment creates a hostile environment, the school must take prompt and effective steps to end the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and, as appropriate, remedy its effects. A school’s failure to treat students consistent with their gender identity may create or contribute to a hostile environment in violation of Title IX.”

In the section called “Identification Documents, Names, and Pronouns” the letter states;

“Under Title IX, a school must treat students consistent with their gender identity even if their education records or identification documents indicate a different sex. imi hiring small bThe Departments have resolved Title IX investigations with agreements committing that school staff and contractors will use pronouns and names consistent with a transgender student’s gender identity.”

Robertson County Schools

Robertson County Schools released the following statement in regards to the letter:

The Robertson County School system received a, “Dear Colleague,” letter from the U.S. Department of Education/Department of Justice regarding transgender restroom facilities. We will review the document and await further guidance from the Tennessee State Department of Education and the Tennessee State Board of Education on how to address the issue identified in the letter.

Legal battles across the country will likely delay the application of the the new gender bathroom policies.

Where do you stand on the issue? Tell us in comments below.

Obituary for Mayre Bell Freeman

Mayre-Bell-Freeman-obitFor those who knew Mayre Bell Freeman, it was clear that her priorities were her family and her church. She was born on February 6, 1922, in Springfield, Tennessee. She lived a long life, dying on May 7, 2016, at the age of 94 at Wayne General Hospital after a brief illness. After completing business school, she worked for the Department of Treasury during World War II, where she met Harry B. Freeman while he was in military service. She and Mr. Freeman were married for more than sixty years. They started housekeeping in Waynesboro, where she has been an active resident for the last sixty-six years. She was a founding member of the Waynesboro Church of Christ, along with the late Joe Heathcock, in 1950. There, as the young church grew, she served as bookkeeper and Sunday school teacher.

As a founding member of the Chickasawhay chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was extremely patriotic. Her country, her state, and her town of Waynesboro were focal to her. She was one of a group of women who helped cultivate a library for the city of Waynesboro.

Her artistic side was expressed in her business, Freeman Florist. She was successful in her pursuit of work, and ended it to have more time with her children. Freeman Insurance is now in the home of the florist. She was supportive of her husband’s business, Freeman Funeral Homes of Waynesboro and Leakesville, and Freeman Funeral Services of Citronelle, Alabama, and served as his sounding board in their nightly discussions.

She and Mr. Freeman were avid golfers, traveling often to play in tournaments. An enthusiastic bridge player, she enjoyed her weekly challenge with others who loved the game. She also enjoyed nature, especially hummingbirds and camellias, both fixtures in her yard.

In her last years, she was cared for and nurtured by a team of caregivers, headed by Juanita Rankin.

floral squareHer parents were Harrell and Mary Bell of Springfield, Tennessee. Adoringly referred to by her family as “Meha,” she is survived by her children, Harrell Freeman (Carlton) of Metairie, Louisiana; and Emily Freeman of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren, Liza Freeman Wright (Chris) of Little Rock, Arkansas; and Will Freeman (Laura) of Montgomery, Alabama; and three great-grandchildren, Fenley, Henry, and George Wright of Little Rock, Arkansas. She is also survived by a cousin Kathy Kemesis, of McMinnville, Tennessee; her sister-in law Willard Freeman Holcomb, and a cousin, Ree O’Connell, both of Waynesboro.

The funeral service is pending.

The police department will have an officer on-site 24 hours a day and only those residing in the closed area will be allowed to travel this section of road during the closure.

The contractor has assured us that they will complete the work as quickly as possible.

Former Ridgetop Police Chief Randy Adcock Dies, he was 59

RIDGETOP TENNESSSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Randall Thomas “Randy” Adcock of Springfield, former Ridgetop Police Chief, passed away Saturday May 14, 2016 after a battle with cancer, he was 59.

“Chief Adcock was a great Chief for the city of Ridgetop for five years. He was well liked by the officers and the citizens of Ridgetop and he will be well missed.

“He died a tragic death, we thought he was doing better and then we found out the cancer had returned. What I  understand is that the cancer actually spread from his brain to his back.
